What is trauma?

Are you suffering from trauma?

Trauma is more commonplace than many folks realize - every human being on this earth has experienced it in some form, at some point in time. Regardless of that fact, the impact that trauma can have on our lives can be devastating.

Trauma can come from any experience which is distressing to the point that it impacts your mind, body, and quality of life — and it is vital to remember that trauma is less about the experience itself, but more about the way you experienced it and its lasting impact on your life.

Some examples of trauma include:

  • Abuse of any kind (emotional, mental, verbal, physical, sexual, financial, spiritual)

  • Adverse childhood experiences including abuse, neglect, and abandonment

  • Prolonged abuse

  • The death of someone you knew, especially a loved one

  • Witnessing trauma, including abuse, violence, death, or school violence, or community violence

  • Religious trauma

  • Homophobia

  • Transphobia

  • Racism

  • Ableism

  • Criticism or shaming

  • Hospitalization for any reason

  • Natural disasters

  • Bullying

  • Harassment

  • Stalking

  • Any instance wherein your boundaries were violated, even if you lacked understanding of the concept of boundaries at that point in time

  • Divorce or breakups

  • Generational trauma

  • Moving

  • Poverty

  • Miscarriage

  • Chronic Illness

  • Motor Vehicle Accidents

This is by no means an exhaustive list - trauma can occur from quite literally anything that overwhelms and distresses us, and the after effects can last indefinitely at times.
